Covering Monolithic Groups with Proper Subgroups

چکیده
Given a finite non-cyclic group G, call σ(G) the smallest number of proper subgroups of G needed to cover G. Lucchini and Detomi conjectured that if a nonabelian group G is such that σ(G) < σ(G/N) for every non-trivial normal subgroup N of G then G is monolithic, meaning that it admits a unique minimal normal subgroup. In this paper we show how this conjecture can be attacked by the direct study of monolithic groups.

Finite subnormal coverings of certain solvable groups
A group is said to have a finite covering by subgroups if it is the set theoretic union of finitely many subgroups. A theorem of B. H. Neumann [11] characterizes groups with finite coverings by proper subgroups as precisely those groups with finite non-cyclic homomorphic images. R. Baer (see [13, Theorem 4.16]) proved that a group has a finite covering by abelian subgroups if and only if it is ...
متن کاملOn the covering number of small symmetric groups and some sporadic simple groups
A set of proper subgroups is a covering for a group if its union is the whole group. The minimal number of subgroups needed to cover G is called the covering number of G, denoted by σ(G). Determining σ(G) is an open problem for many nonsolvable groups. For symmetric groups Sn, Maróti determined σ(Sn) for odd n with the exception of n = 9 and gave estimates for n even. In this paper we determine...
متن کاملOn subgroups of topologized fundamental groups and generalized coverings
In this paper, we are interested in studying subgroups of topologized fundamental groups and their influences on generalized covering maps. More precisely, we find some relationships between generalized covering subgroups and the other famous subgroups of the fundamental group equipped with the compact-open topology and the whisker topology. Moreover, we present some conditions unde...
متن کاملCovering the symmetric groups with proper subgroups
Let G be a group that is a set-theoretic union of finitely many proper subgroups. Cohn defined σ(G) to be the least integer m such that G is the union of m proper subgroups. Tomkinson showed that σ(G) can never be 7, and that it is always of the form q +1 (q a prime power) for solvable groups G. In this paper we give exact or asymptotic formulas for σ(Sn). In particular, we show that σ(Sn) ≤ 2n...
متن کاملAbelian Groups as Unions of Proper Subgroups
Given a direct sum G of cyclic groups, we find a sharp bound for the minimal number of proper subgroups whose union is G. This problem generalizes to sums of cyclic modules over more general rings, such as local and Artinian rings or Dedekind domains and reduces to covering vector spaces by proper subspaces. As a consequence, we are also able to solve the analogous problem for monoids.
